Brussels Sprouts!

Tuesday, November 12th, 2019

They may be small, but Brussels sprouts deliver big on flavour and nutrition. They contain high levels of vitamins A and C, fibre, minerals and antioxidants. They can be roasted, boiled, steamed, sautéed or baked, and can be added to pasta, stir fries, frittatas – the list of possibilities are endless!

Even though we have come to associate sprouts with Christmas, we can’t find any compelling reason as to why. It is thought perhaps it is simply a seasonality factor and because they became widely available in Britain towards the end of the 1800’s it correlated with the invention of our modern ideas of Christmas feasting.

Our spouts at The Hollies come from JR & R Prescott Ltd based at Gores Farm in Lancashire. Roy is third generation in his family business farming at Gores Farm with his wife Sheila, growing many vegetables including over 80 acres worth of sprouts! The sprout seedlings are planted in May ready to be harvested between September and March and are sold either loose or on their stalks. Make sure they roll on to your festive table this year!
