From Field to Fork

Monday, April 20th, 2015

Here at The Hollies Farm Shop we always strive to find the best quality produce and love it when it is in season and we can source it locally. During May the opportunity for field to fork, fresh local produce increases.

Throughout April we were eagerly following the progress updates of Claremont Farm’s asparagus growing. From the beginning of May it will be harvested and we will have daily deliveries of their delicious fresh asparagus from the field, at both Little Budworth and Lower Stretton. The environment and soil at the family-run farm in Bebington, Wirral make for ideal growing conditions. Whether it is grilled, baked, steamed or roasted, asparagus is a refreshing way to add flavour and nutrients to any meal. Why not try lightly steamed stems served with traditional Hollandaise Sauce or aioli, add it into a summer risotto, or let it add crunch to a tasty salad? The British asparagus season is only about 8 weeks long, so get it while it lasts!

May also brings the first harvest of Edward Horton’s Cheshire New Potatoes from his fields just five miles away. These are fresh, creamy and the skin just washes off them. Try them simply boiled with fresh sprigs of mint and lashings of butter. Delicious!

We also have locally grown purple sprouting broccoli. It is described as the colourful cousin of the usual green broccoli and can be used in much the same way. It is leafier and deeper in colour and adds vibrancy and crunch to vegetable dishes.
